Kattu Saaru | Toor Dal Rasam | Simple Rasam | Mangalore Style Rasam. Kattu Saaru prepared only with dal without using rasam powder or vegetables. Kattu Saaru really great when served with hot steamed rice.

Kattu Saaru

 1 tbsp Toor dal
 3 Dried red chilli
 1 tbsp Oil
 2 tbsp Coconut grated
 1 tsp Jaggery
 1 tsp Tamarind extract
 Salt to taste
 Water
For tempering:
 1 tbsp Oil
 ½ tsp Mustard seeds
 1 Dried red chilli

Take a small pan heat 1 tbsp oil, add 1 tbsp toor dal and 3 dried red chilli, fry for 2 min.

Now blend this masala with 2 tbsp grated coconut and 1 tsp tamarind extract with little water.

Transfer this mixture to kadai then add 4 cups water, 1 tsp jaggery and salt to taste, boil for 3 minutes.

Now prepare tempering, take a small pan heat 1 tbsp oil add ½ tsp mustard seeds and 1 dried red chilli, fry 2 min then pour this mixture to kattu saaru or toor dal rasam.
